Kanan Baking Co. prides itself on having high-quality, kosher pareve bread that’s free of GMOs, dairy, bleached flour, and high fructose corn syrup. If you need a vegan option, our pretzel buns taste great.
Topping Suggestions
We put together our favourite flavour combinations for the turkey burger recipe. As you can tell, we love the sweet and salty combination as a burger topping, and there are so many ways to make that happen!
Check out our topping suggestions below. Then, let us know what you think on Facebook and Instagram! We love to hear from you.
1 - Onion Jam, Feta + Arugula
Onion jam is an underrated and delicious topping that compliments the salty feta. Arugula’s peppery flavour packs a punch! Finally, the rich flavour of our brioche buns ties it all together to make it a crowd favourite.
2 - Blue Cheese, Sweet Onion Jam, and Mushrooms
We love onion jam on everything! Combining onion jam with mushrooms and blue cheese is perfect on turkey. Make sure to top it off with brioche!
3 - Tzatziki, Feta + Roasted Red Peppers
Give your turkey burger a Mediterranean flavour by popping red pepper on the grill alongside your patties and remove when they’ve begun to soften. Next, assemble your burger on a fantastic brioche bun from Kanan Baking Co, and top with tzatziki, the turkey patty, feta cheese and roasted peppers.
4 - Avocado and Havarti
If you’re looking for fresh summertime flavour, avocado and Havarti cheese are where it’s at! You can top these burgers with brioche, turkey patties, Havarti cheese, avocado, lettuce and tomatoes. Guacamole works too!
5 - Grilled Pineapple, Peppers + Monterey Jack Cheese
Grilled pineapple is a crowd favourite for burger toppings. We love grilling it and adding it to our turkey burger! As your turkey is grilling, place rings of fresh pineapple on the grill, along with your red pepper, removing it when it begins to soften and develop char marks.
We assemble this burger with our brioche buns, roasted peppers, turkey burger, Monterey Jack cheese and a pineapple ring!
Vegan Toppings:
1 - Hummus
Hummus is a great way to spice up any vegan burger. We top it off with a vegan soft “cheese” and fresh herbs on our pretzel bun.
2 - Onion Jam + Arugula
Arugula is a delicious topping, and onion jam is great as well! If you’re worried that the jam jar at the store isn’t vegan, you can make a quick pickled onion that will add a great bite to your burger!
If you have an artisanal vegan cheesemaker near you, try their feta!
Assemble this burger with a pretzel bun to take it to the next level!
3 - Guacamole + Pico de Gallo
Guacamole is a delicious classic and is a staple on all of our burgers. Starting with the pretzel bun, add romaine lettuce, burger patty, guacamole and pico de gallo (homemade is best!).
Recipe
6 Kanan Baking Co. Brioche buns
1 lb Ground Turkey meat
1 egg
1/2 small onion diced small
1/4 c breadcrumbs
*2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (Or substitute 2-3tbsp of your fav BBQ sauce)
1/2 tsp Salt
1/4 tsp pepper
In a large bowl, beat the egg. Next, mix in all ingredients except meat, and stir to combine. Add turkey meat, using hands to integrate fully. This recipe makes 4-6 patties, depending on your preferred size.
Preheat your grill to medium-high (about 450F). Grill patties for 6-7 minutes per side. Make sure to flip your burger as little as possible to prevent it from crumbling.

Recipe Alterations, Veggie + Vegan
There are many delicious meat alternatives on the market as vegetarian and vegan diets become more mainstream! If you want to try our burger recipe, you can use the Impossible ground “burger” to replace the ground turkey.
You can use the Impossible patties with our pretzel buns and if you need a vegan alternative. You can also try our recipe using the Impossible ground burger and a “flax egg,” made with one tablespoon of ground flax meal and three tablespoons of water. Make sure you give it time to thicken in the fridge for fifteen minutes!
Tips for Grilling
The benefits of turkey burgers are that they are lean and low in fat, making them a healthier option for the grill. However, the lower fat content can make it tricky when it comes to cooking them!
Luckily, we have some great tips that will make it easy!
1 - the BBQ should be nice and hot before you place the burgers on the grill.
After you preheat your grill, let it stay hot for another 5-10 minutes so that the grilling surface is hot as well! The extra heating time will help prevent your patties from sticking, causing them to fall apart.
2 - Oil your grilling surface
Choose a vegetable oil with a high smoke point (meaning it won’t burn off in the hot environment). You won’t want to oil the grill directly when it’s hot (those oil sprays will catch!).
Instead, spray your oil or pour it on a paper towel. Next, take your tongs and rub the paper towel on the hot grill before immediately placing your turkey burgers on the BBQ.
3 - Leave it!
To ensure turkey burgers keep their shape, you need to flip them as little as possible. Let them cook for 6-7 minutes before flipping, and let them finish on the other side.
